Mary was born in Atlanta the daughter of the late Thomas Ernest Flury and the late Mary Carolyn Flury. She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, John Bennett. She was a graduate of Bass High School and continued her education in business that lead to a successful secretarial career. She moved to Saint Simons Island in the 1970’s and was a secretary with Sea Island for almost 20 years before relocating back to Atlanta. In Atlanta she was the executive secretary for the Department of Labor. She retired from the Georgia Department of Labor in 2004.
Mary was of the Baptist faith and a true southern lady. She was an avid reader. Gone With The Wind was her all-time favorite book and movie. Mary was also a well-traveled lady with trips to Alaska, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico, and many others as well. She had a witty sense of humor and loved good clean jokes. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memories are her son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Barbie Johnson of Saint Simons Island, GA; her two sisters, Pat McElroy (Ernest) and Emily Bennett both of Atlanta, GA. Also several nieces and nephews will carry on her fond memories.
A graveside service to honor Mary’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 23, 2021 in Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta, GA with her nephew, Rev. Thomas McElroy, officiating.
