Mary E. “Suge” Cannon, 84, of Darien, passed away Friday, February 21, 2014 at Magnolia Manor, St. Simons Island, Georgia. The family will receive friends Monday, February 24, 2014 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home from 6-8PM. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Darien, GA. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home at 11AM with Rev. Jack Peeler officiating. Interment will follow at St. Andrews Cemetery in Darien, Georgia. Active pallbearers include: Jeffery Turner, Ashton Alford, Trip Durant, James Johnson, Bob Cannon and Steve Jessup. Honorary pallbearers include: the Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of Darien, the “Kirkland Clan”, and the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Darien.
Mary was born January 26, 1930 in Brunswick to the late Walter Thomas Pitts and Myra Louise Young. She is a native of McIntosh County, where she lived for 84 years. She graduated from Darien High School and was a member of the Eastern Star and a past Matron. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Darien and served as a clerk at Shellman Baptist Church.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband: Robert Walter Cannon, Sr.; a son, John W. “Bill” Alford, Jr.; three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her children: Mary Louise Johnson and her husband James of Fernandina Beach, FL; Michael Pitts Alford and his wife Nancy of St. Simons Island; Patricia Carol Durant of Darien; Faye Moody of Riverdale, GA; Robert “Bob” Cannon of Jesup, GA; Victor Cannon of Miami, FL; and Ralph Cannon of Molena, GA; one daughter in law: Nancy H. Alford of Darien; one sister in law: Buena Pitts of St. Simons Island; nine grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 or to the First Baptist Church of Darien, 201 Fifth Street, Darien, GA 31305.
