Lou Nell Brockinton Roberson Gibson passed away on July 3rd. She was born on St. Simons Island, Ga (October 20, 1935), in the home of her late parents, Alfred Austin Brockinton and Rebecca Carnegie Tomlinson Brockinton. Her father was a third-generation harbor pilot and piloted ships in and out of the Brunswick harbor for over 40 years.
Her paternal grandparents were Captain Samuel Archibald Brockinton and Medora Evelyn Roberts of
Brunswick, Ga. Maternal grandparents were Ella Elizabeth Miller and Joseph J. Tomlinson of Cumberland Island and St. Marys, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her husband (Glynn Academy high school sweetheart), William Dewayne Roberson, who was killed in a 1962 explosion at K I Sawyer AFB, Marquette, Michigan. Lou Nell was predeceased by her sister Nancy Lois Brockinton Pittman of St. Simons. Also preceding her in death was a former husband, Clarence F. Gibson who was a loving father to Paige.
Lou Nell is survived by her daughter, Paige Virginia Roberson Webster and husband, Thomas Nathaniel Webster, of Johns Creek, Ga and grandchildren, Austin Elizabeth Webster (22) and William Roberson Webster (19). She is also survived by her brother in law, Arthur L. Pittman of St. Simons, her niece, Kelda Rebecca Pittman Ryan of Delray Beach, FL, and several great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lou Nell was a 50-year member of numerous Sunday school classes concluding with the Beacon Class, St. Simons United Methodist Church. This church was organized in the Brockinton home on Butler Avenue in 1938. Her father served as general construction contractor for the chapel.
Lou Nell served as President of the Brunswick Junior Woman's Club and was voted Young Woman of the Year 1971-72. She served as Junior Director of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs. She enjoyed her memberships with the St. Simons Civinettes and Cotillion clubs.
She loved St. Simons Island and local history and served many years as an East Coast Tour Guide for the incoming tourist coaches providing historical presentations to over several thousand visitors.
Ms. Gibson graduated from Glynn Academy and Georgia Southern College where she obtained a business certificate. For many years, she handled the billing for her father's piloting business that had been in their family for over 200 years. Lou Nell worked as a secretary for the Air Force for three years.
The service to honor Lou Nell’s life will be held in the original chapel at St. Simons United Methodist Church on Friday, July 7 at 11am. Memorial donations may be made to St. Simons United Methodist Church, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, Epworth By the Sea, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted with Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home.
