John Herman Padgett, 93, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Mr. Padgett was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Leola Copeland Padgett. It was only fitting that he passed on the day of her birthday to reunite with her in Heaven.
Mr. Padgett was born March 24, 1923 in Wheeler County, GA. His parents were John Eugene Padgett and Ethel Carroll Padgett. From a young age, he learned the value of hard work, leaving school in the 8th grade to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. As a young man, his love of his country lead him to enlist in the military, where he would proudly serve his country and lead a distinguished military career. He served in World War II with the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1942-1943 and U.S. Marine Corps from 1943-1945. Mr. Padgett also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946-1964. While serving in the military, he met and married the love of his life, Leola, in 1946. Together, they raised 3 children and instilled in them a desire to worship and serve God. In that realm, Mr. Padgett was an active member of Blythe Island Baptist Church for more than 50 years where he faithfully taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon, and was very active in other phases of the ministry. Mr. Padgett has been a current member of Bible Baptist Church for the past few years.
After his retirement from the military, he excelled as a salesman for Crain Chemical Company for the next 20 years, winning numerous awards and honors. No matter where his work led him, he always put his family’s needs first and was very proud of his three children. In his retirement years, you could find him fishing, shrimping, or crabbing off of his river dock, and enjoying his wife’s fried shrimp suppers.
Mr. Padgett was also preceded in death by his daughter, Darlene Tyler; an infant son, Michael Herman Padgett; two brothers, Lyman and Frank, and three sisters; Bernice, Verbina, and Mable. He is survived by his sons, Carl Padgett (Paula) and Kevin Padgett (Joni), both of Brunswick; a brother, John Eugene Padgett, Jr.; and sister, Joyce Alma Funk. He is also survived by several grandchildren: Justin Tyler, Lindsey Tyler, April Padgett Page (Jim), Christi Padgett, Carl Stephen Padgett, Katherine Padgett, and Brittany Padgett; and two great grandchildren: Garrett Page and Gracelynn Page.
The family will receive friends at Edo Miller on Monday, November 21, 2016 from 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Michael Landrum and will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 11 am in the chapel of Edo Miller, with burial to follow at Ella Park Cemetery in Waverly, GA. Pallbearers will be Jim Page, Carl Stephen Padgett, Barry Copeland, David Copeland, Dustin Copeland, Mark Copeland, and Justin Tyler
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to the Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.
