James Ira Miller Sr. (Jim) 65 left our world unexpectedly to be with his heavenly family on September 14, 2011 at approximately 3:20 PM due to health complications. Jim was a remarkable man that never met a stranger, and had no difficulties with lending a hand to anyone in need. Jim was son to Jonathan Ralph Miller and Karen Henderson Miller McGilvray, but was honored to call I.D. McGilvry dad for many years.
A native of Brunswick Georgia, he returned there to live after retiring from the nuclear power industry. After working his way into engineering for Duke Power, he later became Component Engineer for Duke Engineering Services (DESI) overseeing the cranes and backup generators. Jim worked on a major Nor Burg diesel generator project for the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. He was proud to receive the Trendsetter Award from Duke Power for his work on improving the safety and efficiency of the crane used to remove the head off the reactor during refueling. His career shipped him to many different locations throughout the United States, where he made many friends that touched his life. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his brother J.R. Miller Jr., and grandson James Ira Miller III.
Survivors include his fiancée Martha K. Bolinger of the home. Additional survivors are his four children he was very proud of; Karen Miller Hoffer and husband Brian of Lancaster PA., James Ira Miller Jr. and wife Angie of Newton NC, I.D. McGilvray Miller of Hickory NC, and Rebecca Joyce Miller of Hickory NC. He also left behind a sister, Carolyn Horrigan of Brunswick GA, and his sister-in-law Harriet Quarterman Miller of Brunswick GA. Jim left behind James and Joe Bolinger of Brunswick GA that he looked to as his own children as well.
Jim had nine grandchildren, Marty 21, Josh 20, Scott 17, Shane 17, Haley 14, Austin 13, Ty 8, and Aidan 5, whom all loved their Paw-Paw immensely. Jim also had many nieces and nephews that filled his life with immeasurable love, and many looked to as their Paw-Paw.
Jim’s best friends Rick Hunning of Salisbury NC, Buddy Price of Cowpens SC, Chuck Reynolds of Carey NC, and Scott Rowe of Boiling Springs NC will forever be touched by his friendship and will miss him infinitely.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Edo Miller and Son Funeral Home at 7:00 PM on September 17, in Brunswick GA., with his nephew Jonathan R. Miller officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the start of service.
