Elizabeth “Betty” Fendig age 91 of Saint Simons Island, Georgia entered peacefully through Heaven’s Gates on Monday, June 6, 2022 surrounded by her family. Betty was born in Vero Beach, Florida to the late Edward C. Bruce and the late Beth Baldwin Bruce. She was also predeceased by her late husband, Edwin R. Fendig, Jr.; her daughter, Lucy Wynn Fendig; and a brother, Edward C. Bruce, Jr.
Betty is survived by her sons, Edwin R. Fendig III (Deborah) and Bruce B. Fendig (Teri); and her grandchildren, Claire Elizabeth Fendig and Bruce B. Fendig, Jr.
Betty attended the University of Georgia until she married Edwin R. Fendig, Jr. in December of 1950. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority at the University and was voted University of Georgia’s Greek society “Miss Modern Venus” of 1950. Betty always had fond memories of the time she spent in her youth staying with her Grandmother on Sea Island playing with her cousins and others on the largely undeveloped Island. She and Edwin were both active lifeguards in the summers between their college years. Betty became the President of the Cassina Garden Club in 1962. She was also an active tennis player in her youth and won the Mother/Daughter USTA Senior National Championship in 2004. She was an avid bridge player also and achieved the title of LIFE MASTER.
Betty lived her entire adult life on St. Simons Island and was employed in the family sign company Fendig Outdoor Advertising and later Fendig Signs. She enjoyed the lifestyle of the Island. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
The Fendig family will receive friends Friday, June 10, 2022 between 6 – 8:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. The graveside service to honor Betty's life will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, June 11, 2022 in Christ Church Cemetery on St. Simons Island with Dr. John Laws will be the officiant for the service.
Donations can be made to the St. Simons Presbyterian Church or the College of Coastal Georgia to establish The Lucy Wynn Fendig Women’s Tennis Endowed Scholarship. Please include Fendig Tennis in the memo line.
