Edith M. Edwards of St. Simons Island died of cancer on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the age of 67. She was born on Long Island, NY on March 7, 1945 to Paul and Alice Steen. She lived on Long Island until marrying her beloved husband of 45 years, Tom Edwards. They lived and raised a family in Atlanta. After teaching in the public school system for five years, she began practicing law in the Atlanta area, and then accepted an attorney position in Valdosta, GA. She was an assistant district attorney in two circuits in Georgia then began private practice in Valdosta consisting of a successful career with emphasis on trial and court appearances in criminal defense and domestic cases.
She began are studies as a child and continued drawing and painting, especially in oil color, for her entire life, selling numerous works and creating a gallery in her home. The beach was always her favorite place to be and settling in St. Simons Island in 2005 brought many happy moments swimming, biking and meeting some wonderful friends.
She gained strength through faith which began early in childhood. Among survivors, in addition to her husband are her two children: Janice and Tommy and her three grandchildren: Bonnie, Jennifer and Elizabeth; she is also survived by her special brother: Pete Steen of Putnam Valley, NY and several other friends and relatives.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 6-8PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A funeral service is scheduled at Lord of Life Lutheran Church for 1 PM on Monday, May 21, 2012 with Pastor Paul Elbert officiating. Burial will follow at Palmetto Cemetery.
