He was a dedicated and loyal friend, loving father, avid golfer and a man of strong integrity who loved his community and supported it generously. He was born on April 25, 1932 to the late J.C. Shell and the late Pearl Crawford Shell and was the oldest of six children.
Lamont graduated from Glynn Academy in the class of 1950. He was in the DCT program and worked part time for Olin Henry at Glynn Electric Supply Company. After his high school graduation, he joined the Navy and proudly served for two and a half years during the Korean War. He returned to Glynn Electric in 1953 after his honorable discharge from the Navy. He attended Perry Business School at night for three years and graduated in 1956.
Lamont was a long time member of SSI First Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon in 1976. He was a faithful member of the Builder's Sunday School Class. He enjoyed the game of golf and had the thrill of having five hole-in-ones and an albatross. He also enjoyed playing tennis and tinkering with his 1956 T-Bird.
Lamont was a loyal member of Boy Scout troop #66 in Brunswick and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1946. He returned to Scouting when his son joined Troop #248. He served as Assistant Scoutmaster and was presented the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth.
He served on the Board of Directors for First Georgia Bank.
In 2008 he retired from Glynn Electric Supply as President and Co-Owner with Buddy Cheek. After his retirement, he volunteered at Hospice of the Golden Isles for 14 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Saundra Shell Moore, a brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Betty Goodman Shell, a sister-in-law Betty Ferrell Shell and a brother-in-law Jay Langfelder.
He is survived by his wife, Betty and three daughters. Laurie Shell Kilgore of Orlando, Susan Shell of Jacksonville, Christy Shell Gotsch (Jason) of Marietta and a son, Craig Shell. He enjoyed his five grandchildren, Lauren Kilgore Wilson and husband Justin, Meredith and Grant Gotsch and Marin and Molly Shell and his two great grandchildren Remy and Sutton Wilson. He is also survived by two sisters Nancy Shell Smith (Johnny) and Pat Shell Langfelder and a brother Jim Shell of Franklin, Tennessee.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024, at 2:00 in the afternoon at St. Simons Island First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be graciously accepted at St. Simons Island First Baptist Church 729 Ocean Blvd, St. Simons Island, Ga 31522.
