Charles Herbert Hill of St. Simons Island died on Monday, October 5, 2015. He was born on September 22, 1927 in Conyers, Georgia. He graduated from Conyers High School and then served in the United State Marine Corps. Charles received his B. S. in Chemistry from the University of Georgia in 1952, and after a brief time working at the DuPont Corporation in Wilmington, Delaware, returned to Georgia to do graduate work at Emory University, receiving a Masters Degree in Chemistry in 1956.
Charles and Barbara White were married in 1954; they moved to St. Simons Island in 1956. Charles had a long career as a research chemist at Hercules, Inc., from which he retired in 1987.
Charles and Barbara are long time members of the St. Simons United Methodist Church and he was active in many church activities, including serving as a Trustee, as Chairman of the Administrative Board, and as a Sunday School teacher.
Charles is survived by Barbara, his wife of 60 years, his two daughters, Pam (Alan) Anderson of Olympia, Washington and Peggy Dean of Aurora, Indiana. He and Barbara have five grandchildren: Nicholas Anderson of Denver, Colorado, Rebecca Dean of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jennifer Dean of Raleigh, North Carolina, Carolyn Anderson of Amherst, Massachusetts, and Harry Dean of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by his two sisters, Carolyn “Pat” Anderson and Joyce Coney and by a brother, Harry Hill, along with nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10th in the sanctuary of the St. Simons United Methodist Church. A reception and time for visiting with the wife and family will be held immediately following the service in the adjacent Thorpe Building.
To honor Charles’ dedication to his church family and his love for St. Simons, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers., memorial donations be made to the St. Simons United Methodist Church, 624 Ocean Boulevard, St. Simons Island, Georgia 31522 or the St. Simons Land Trust, 1624 Frederica Road #6, St. Simons Island, Georgia 31522.
