Born on October 7th, 1947, in Nahunta, GA to the late Olin Jefferson Dowling and Hester Mae Morgan Dowling, he and his family moved to Brunswick when he was around three years old.
Charles graduated from Glynn Academy and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Air Force. After his service in the Vietnam War, he married Sylvia Willis Dowling in 1971, a union that lasted until death.
He went on to attend the Brunswick Technical School to learn more about the automotive field, after which he worked for the Pulp Mill for three months until Babcock and Wilcox Steel reached out to him. He worked for B&W until their closure, and then went to work for Marine Port Terminals before transferring to the Georgia Port Authority until his retirement in 2012. During Charles’ career, he worked his way up to leadership roles. He was known for being a dependable, hard-working man, a father who taught his children right from wrong, to love and honor their heavenly Father, and a husband who loved his wife and took care of his family.
When Charles was not working or spending time with his family, he could often be found outdoors, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed playing golf with his GA Port family and was a member of Anguilla Hunting Club.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Annette Dowling Tucker and Marilyn Dowling Clayton; as well as his grandmothers, grandfathers, and several cousins, aunts, and uncles.
He is survived by the love of his life, Sylvia Willis Dowling; his children, Becky Renee Smith, Shane Jefferson Dowling, and Brandon Jevan Dowling (Erica); and grandchildren, Taylor Renee Smith, Elie Janae Dowling, Noah Thomas Smith, Arianna Joy Dowling, Zane Jefferson Dowling, and Rayden James Dowling.
We will deeply miss you Charles, and always love you. May you rest in peace now.
