Betty Jean Andrews Rhudy, of St. Simons Island, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 15, 2010 at Hospice of The Golden Isles. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010, 11 A.M. at St. Simons Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Brearley officiating.
Born in Marion, VA to the late Wiley Jacob and Gavesta Arlene Powell Andrews, Mrs. Rhudy was a graduate of Marion High School in Marion, VA and a graduate of Westhampton College, the women’s division of the University of Richmond, VA. Mrs. Rhudy taught school in Martinsville, VA and at the Park Road School of Williamsville, NY. For 37 years, she enjoyed being a caring mother and a devoted wife in Pittsford, NY. She was a member of Pittsford Presbyterian Church where she was the director of the Sunday school programs for several years. After her children grew to college age, she assumed the duties of dental office manager in her husband’s dental practice. She and Dr. Rhudy retired in 1997 and moved to St. Simons Island, GA.
Mrs. Rhudy was a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church and The Margaret Britt Sunday school class. She was presently serving on the board of Elders, and was an active member of Presbyterian Women, having served as circle leader and moderator. She was most proud of being the current recipient of the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership Award. She enjoyed being involved in community activities and was a member of Shorebirds, Cassina Garden Club, The St. Simons Library League, St. Simons Land Trust, and served for many years as a docent at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society at the lighthouse.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Dr. William Porter Rhudy, Jr., of St. Simons Island, a son William P. Rhudy, III of Charlottesville, VA, a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Rhudy of Bradenton, FL, and four grandchildren, William P. Rhudy, IV, Nicholas F. Rhudy, Leigh Elizabeth Growney and Tyler William Growney, and a dear cousin, Janie Whaley, Of Chapel Hill, NC.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Margaret Britt Sunday School Class. Remembrances may be made in her name to St. Simons Presbyterian Church.
