Polo was born in Matamoros, Mexico and lived most of his life in Brownsville, Tx San Benito, Tx and a few years in Chicago. At a young age he was a newspaper street vendor, delivered newspapers on his bike and shined shoes in downtown Brownsville after school. Despite having little formal education, he supported his mother and siblings by working as a migrant worker, a retail clerk and a delivery man.
Upon marrying our beloved mother, Virginia Mercado, Polo began a fruitful career in sales to support his entire family. In Chicago he worked hard as a Bible salesman. After moving to Brownsville, he worked as a salesman, route driver, and store manager for various employers, including Butter Krust and Model Laundry.
Polo was frequently honored as salesman of the year and received other awards due to his excellent sales and customer service skills.
He eventually received his GED and took courses in Business Administration and Communication at Texas Southmost College Brownsville.
Ultimately, he managed his own uniform business, Valley Uniforms, later known as Uniform Sales & Laundry.
He looked forward to family gatherings, cookouts and enjoyed participating in the family traditions, activities and dancing to the twist. He adored his family; his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He went above and beyond for his family in every way possible and loved them unconditionally. He spoke very highly of his sons-in-law; was very proud of them and always introduced them as his sons.
He was a true believer of God; had accepted Christ in 2007 and loved hearing sermons from a few pastors such as Greg Laurie and Charles Stanley including Christian music on his little radio out on the patio (his favorite place) as well as his favorite 50s-60s songs. On TV, he’d watch his favorite pastors whenever he wasn’t watching his western movies/shows or Walker Texas Ranger. He rededicated his life to Christ this year. He would attend Christian church services in the Dallas area. He often advised his family, especially his grandchildren on the value of constantly seeking God, and having a relationship with Christ.
He was a true sports fan, especially of the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed keeping up with sports stats of all teams.
Even at 86, Polo was always on the go and worked till the end, but that’s just the way he was. A true example of the Energizer Bunny! He was a people person and enjoyed talking to people. He touched so many people’s lives with his personality and was very loyal to his customers. He treated his customers like family. He will be deeply missed.
