Nelson was born on April 24,1955 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. His parents, Cleofe and Providencia Hernández, were vacationing on the island and returned to their home in Brooklyn two weeks after his birth. As a youth, Nelson was a Boy Scout and served as an altar boy. He attended catholic schools in Park Slope and Chelsea Vocational High School, graduating in 1973.
In 1980, Nelson married Helen Santiago; their son, Stephen, was born in 1982. Nelson was a dedicated father. When he began his career with the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority, he became a stay-at-home Dad by day and a bus operator at night. He was an active member of the PTA at Stephen’s school and was always available to accompany his class on school trips.
Nelson had a successful career with the MTA. He was promoted to Dispatcher and then Superintendent and spent the last years of his career as an instructor training new bus operators. Nelson was admired and respected by his students who nicknamed him “The Hammer” and called him “Mr. H”. Nelson retired in 2017 after 32 years of service.
Nelson considered family the most important part of his life. He was a loving husband and father, and was adored by his granddaughters, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, cousins, and extended family. Nelson’s family and friends knew they could count on him. He was always available for rides to the airport, and to lend a hand to friends and family members in need of support.
Nelson was known for his sense of humor and, despite his tough exterior, had a sentimental streak. He loved music and was a gifted photographer and avid watch collector. Nelson and Helen were blessed to be able to spend time traveling and, in 2018, they took Nelson’s dream trip to Australia. This past January they celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary.
Nelson meant so much to his family and friends. Their cherished memories will forever keep him alive in their hearts.
