I just heard about Joeys passing this very moment. I met Joey 45 years ago with his friend Richie at a Club med in the Bahamas. I visited him in Brooklyn a few years later. I always will remember him, how could you ever forget his generosity, smile, and unique personality. One of a kind , he was a special person loyal to his friends and passionate about his family. A pillar of his community, he was Brooklyn at its finest his entire life. Unforgettable character in the absolute best way , he was a Bklyn Classic!
Pisa Pork Store was legendary! And So was Joey Pisa! RIP Sir your humor and your loyalty will be remembered by everyone lucky enough to have known you! My sincerest condolences to the Sanfratello family! This loss is very tough.

A year has gone by since we lost Joe and miss him. I want to let you know that he is in our prayers.

Joe, the memories I have of you as a child and as an adult are so meaningful. From the visits to my parents and big lunches (stochu) and the tour you gave Matt and me of your house a few years back. You were a gem. You were always more impressed with me even more than my own father at times and I appreciate that. You are so very missed and when the anger of your loss subsides I hope to regain all of those memories in a more positive light. Rest easy. Until we meet again.

To the Sanfratello Family - Four years ago I moved to Yonkers after having lived in Brooklyn for over 30 years.  Pisa was a must stop every weekend for their prepared foods and especially for the fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers.
I was always warmly greeted by Joe and the whole family even after I moved to Yonkers and would make a special trip back to Brooklyn.  I stopped by the other day and was so sad to see the shutters down but then to read the sign.  My sincerest condolences  to the entire Sanfratello Family.  Joe, the entire family and all of those who worked at Pisa will be sorely missed.

Joe was a wonderful person, we go way back to the early 80s Joe always greeted me with respect and fresh mozzarella, he never let me pay for a drink, we laughed hard..... When I first moved into the neighborhood, I was happy to see a true  blue Brooklyn pork store down the block. From the first day I met Joe, he was immediately kind and generous. He would always hand over a rice ball or whatever he had just freshly made for me to try. I often had to buy it because it always so delicious! Sadly, I haven’t been to the pork store the last few years because of heath issues, but I will always remember how great he was to the kids. He will always remain a pillar of this community and may he rest easy up in heaven. 

This is Michael Ammirabile from Howard Beach.  I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear of Joe’s passing.  I was absolutely shocked when I heard. I saw him only a couple of months ago before the store shut down. I will always have fond memories of him. He was always so generous when I came into the store and my kids always loved when he gave them mozzarella sticks.  I will be sure to keep Joe and your family in my prayers during this terrible time.  Again my condolences. God bless.   

I knew him my whole life. At the store like all the kids that came in he always was friendly and gave all of us a piece of mozzarella.I found out today that he’s gone. My reaction is, to be the best that I could be. So I could make him proud. When I got home, Joe was one of the people I had to see. Was so happy when I saw him and everyone at the store. Joe is a big part of my childhood. I’m thinking he’s having a good time with my dad, Joe Capone in heaven. Even as I write this. Joe will always be in thoughts and heart. Thank you for being in my life

I work for alps provisions and I’ve been delivering to the store since 2013. Joe always made sure I left with a bag of food. He even chased me out to the truck a couple of times to make sure he gave me something. Really nice guy. Glad I had the chance to know him. See you on the other side brother.

Isabella - I’m going to miss visiting you. My favorite memories are being by your house and eating pizza on Sundays.  It was my favorite day.

Frank - I’m going to miss you chasing me around the house. Sunday’s at Uncle Joe’s was always my favorite.

Dominic - I’ll miss all your hugs and kisses. I wish you were here to chase me around like you did with my big brother.

I moved into Bensonhurst 44 years ago. And that way my first experience meeting you. As everyone has stated I don’t believe I can say it better you were a legend on Kings  Hwy.  I’ve never heard negative word spoken about you  as everyone has stated before .  me and my family will miss you greatly and eating mozzarella will never be the  same.

I’m so deeply saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. Joe is someone I can say that I remember my entire life, from when I was a kid I can remember walking through the door at Pisa and immediately Joe would greet me and my Mom, ask about our family and would always give us a fresh riceball and a slice of my favorite cold cut. Joe had a way of making everyone he met feel like the most important person in the world. No matter how busy he was, he would always personally greet everyone that walked into Pisa. This is the Joe that I’ll always remember, and I’m certain that everyone that knew him feels the same way.  It was such a pleasure to know you, I can’t think of Joe Pisa and not smile with countless fond memories, you definitely made our neighborhood a better place. At 14 years old Joe took me in to work at Pisa Pork Store and it was easily the best experience of my life. Joe was more than a boss. He was a friend, he was family and above all else he was a role model. The one thing I will always remember about Joe was his amazing ability to make you feel like you were the only person in the room. A packed store with a line out the door, hundreds of customers day in and day out and he knew every detail about your life, your families. He’d ask about a sick relative, a new job, a new baby, a new car. Every person Joe came in contact with was the most important person at that moment. Only a man with a heart of gold can do that. I worked for Joe for almost 10 years and visited the store at least once a month after that and he always had a smile on his face. Always. No matter what mood you were in he put a smile on your face instantly. Thank you for the best childhood memories Joe.  Thank you for always making me feel like the most important person in the world. To the beautiful, loving Sanfratello family, it has always been an honor to be apart of your second family. I hold you all so close to my heart. Your family, especially Joe have been the cornerstone of our little neighborhood in Gravesend and in so many families. Joe’s legacy will forever live on. Always smile, because Joe would not have it any other way. My thoughts and condolences are with everyone grieving over the loss Joe as he has certainly impacted the lives of everyone he’s come in contact with. RIP Joe and thank you for the endless memories.

I've been away from West 6th street for over 30 years but Joey Pisa is in so many of my good Brooklyn memories - at the beach or the clubs, he knew how to have a good time.

I’ve known Joe for over 50 years. So sad to hear about his passing .We hung out together with  a crew of other friends. I remember when he worked at Valencia Pork Store on 18th ave. Joe bought a volkswagon bettle back in the late 60’s. Didn’t know how to drive stick. I taught him. My condolences to his family. Rest In Peace my friend. You will be missed.

Who can forget that smile......that congeniality towards his patrons.......that 'less than quiet' voice echoing from the back of the store!! THAT WAS YOU, JOE!

I can recall endless times when parents would come into the store with their children, (some of them crying, some restless) Joe would stop what he was preparing on the slicing machine, and offer a piece of cold cut to those children. He'd say, "Here, take it......you're gonna like it. it's good!" The crying and fidgeting stopped, and Joe happily went back to what he was doing!

PISA was not only the place where you would get the BEST FRESH HOMEMADE MOZZARELLA in all of Brooklyn (and possibly in all of New York), but it was the meeting place especially on endless Saturdays where old friends, 'paesani', and new friends would gather, and catch up on weekly happenings, while waiting for their orders to be filled!  

PISA was the success story of the "MOM & POP" generation, built on the basics: top quality food, respect for the patrons, and meeting the demands and necessities of those families. 
You, JOE,were its POSTER CHILD! 

To Giuseppina and Franca, may you find strength during these horrific moments in time......when the entire world is in pain......and you're dealing with the loss of your brother.  Most of all, may your courage and strength bring solace to your grieving mother, whose loss is so difficult for her to bear.

I want to say good by my brother I. Can’t be there but my heart will be good by my good friend and brother you always be in my heart Joe 

Just a wonderful man. I will always remember how he would ask my boys when they were young whether they wanted bologna or cheese. We will all miss Joe. My family sends its heartfelt condolences to his family ....if there are any public services in the future please let the neighborhood know.

What would I hear when I walked through the door? A cheery "Teacher, how you doing?" You better be nice to those kids...don't be mean". Franca told me how much trouble the nuns had with Joe, so my answer was that he was lucky that I wasn't his teacher, 'cause I would have straightened him out! When I told him that I was retiring, he looked concerned. What would he do with himself if he retired, he said, because, of course, his life was in the store, a family business and treasure to the community.  And what a kind and generous family - the sisters good naturedly letting him boss them around, and taking care of his every need. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family - may your faith help you through this difficult time.
