Beatrice Kaplan

Beatrice was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on May 27, 1920, as Sabina Schreckinger, daughter of Anna Deborah (nee Karp) and Alex/Elias Schreckinger. She was the youngest of five siblings.

She died, at her Brooklyn home, at age of 102 on Nov. 4, 2022, and was buried Nov. 6, at Beth Moses Cemetery in West Babylon, Long Island, NY, next to her beloved husband Sidney Edward Kaplan.

Her survivors include her children: Dr. Roy Kaplan (Sherri), Rochelle Kaplan (Art Lipson) and Dr. Robert Kaplan; her granddaughter Jennifer Lebow (Brad), and great-grandchildren Olivia, Ben and Nate Lebow. And her wonderful caregiver, Dawnalee Stewart (Norman), who sustained Bea for close to ten years.

Beatrice was predeceased by her husband, Sidney; her parents and siblings, her son Ronald Jay Kaplan, and her grandson Joshua Michael Kaplan.

Bea was the epitome of love, style and spirit. She drew people to her with her perfect smile and positive and adventurous attitude. With her high heels, big hats, wild sunglasses, red lipstick and colorful scarves - she drew appreciative smiles, even into her 90s. She reluctantly gave up her high heels at 92; instead she wore animal print low heeled boots.

She taught elementary school (grades kindergarten through third grade) at PS 99, PS 253 and PS 124 in Brooklyn, for almost 30 years, before retiring in 1988. She taught, with flair, creativity and individual attention, all her students to read.

She noticed things and taught others to notice details and to appreciate beauty. She knew what was important in life- curiosity, beauty, people, spontaneity and adaptability.

In the hospital, less than a week before she died, she exclaimed, “It’s been a marvelous experience,” recalling her life - with gratitude. She turned life’s sorrows into opportunities to give back. She long volunteered for God’s Love We Deliver, bringing meals to those afflicted with AIDS, after she lost her son Ronald to the disease. She knew, too, how to take care of herself. Until COVID, she did weekly Aquacize, followed by a massage. She loved Broadway, travel, eating out, museums and galleries, long walks, her Japanese garden, dressing up and meeting new people.

She is a fallen giant and will be missed by all who knew her.
