(June 18, 1928-December 20, 2022) LINCOLN, MA--POLLACK—Sandy (Rosenthal), age 94, died peacefully at home at the Commons in Lincoln on December 20, 2022 after several years of declining health. She was the beloved wife for 70 years of the late Herbert W. Pollack, who often referred to her as a “renaissance woman of her time.”
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Irwin and Matilda Rosenthal, Sandy was age five when her mother died. In her 2001 memoir, The Making of a Woman, she shared personal stories about the life-long pain and effect of losing her mother so young.
Sandy earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brooklyn College, and, in her 50s, a Master’s in Business from Antioch University. She did post-graduate work in French at Boston University.
She began her career as a first-grade teacher in New York, where she and Herb raised their two daughters. They relocated to Lexington, MA in 1966, where they lived for 45 years, before moving to Lincoln Commons.
As her “nest” emptied, Sandy enjoyed teaching French as a substitute teacher at Lexington High School, MA; created a Middlesex Community College program, LIVE, for teachers seeking new careers, and wrote and published a handbook, “Alternative Careers for Teachers.” At age 53, she founded and, for 11 years, ran Sandy Pollack Associates, a high-tech management search firm.
An art and opera lover, art collector, and prolific painter, she was elected to the Boston Lyric Opera’s Board of Directors in 1995 and to the Board of Overseers of the DeCordova Museum in 1997. As a docent at the DeCordova Sculpture Park, Sandy was most gratified by leading a hands-on tour she adapted for sight-impaired adults. Sandy and Herb were extremely philanthropic to these organizations and numerous others.
She will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Jill Kutchin (Ed) of Andover, MA and Mindy Pollack-Fusi (Steve) of Bedford, MA, her adoring granddaughters Melissa Watkins (Bryan) of Arlington, VA, Julie Kutchin of New York City, NY, and step-granddaughter, Gina Fusi of Bedford, MA. Sandy’s beloved brother, Arthur Rowe, predeceased her in 2007.
She also leaves her sister-in-law Geri Pollack of New York City, NY; two nephews and a niece. Also grieving for Sandy are her wonderful health aides who kept her well-cared for, entertained and smiling.
Donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to Temple Isaiah, Lexington, MA; Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org/Miami, FL 33131) or the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Development Office, Boston, MA.
A private graveside service will be held.
