Richard Alan Vetstein, of Newton, Massachusetts, died on August 17, 2023, at the age of 64. Son of the late Leona and Arnold Vetstein. Sister of Nancy Hershfield and her husband, Rob. Uncle of Andrew Hershfield. Best of pals to many.
Richard was the inspiration for the League School of Greater Boston, one of the first schools in New England dedicated to teaching students with autism. His parents cofounded the school in 1966, when autism was little understood. Richard also was the inspiration to hundreds of parents, who heard his story of independence and acceptance.
Richard graduated from Newton North High School in 1978 and worked for most of his life. He held jobs at the Newton Marriott, Purity Supreme, Bread & Circus, Whole Foods, and Stop & Shop as a responsible and hard worker. He lived independently, and enjoyed listening to the Beatles, going out to museums and meals, riding his motor scooter, and writing birthday cards.
Richard defined and defied autism. He was a connector, a communicator, a sweet soul, a strongly independent force, and a true friend. As he said, “Friends till the end.” He will be forever remembered and missed with love, respect and a smile.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline. Burial to follow at Temple Emeth Memorial Park, 776 Baker Street, West Roxbury.
