Myron "Mike" Lawrence Atlas, of Dedham, died Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the age of 96.
Myron, known to his many friends as Mike, was born in 1928 to Esther and Sam Atlas of Winthrop, MA where he grew up with his sister Miriam, brother Elliot, and his nephews Stephen and Laurence. He graduated from the Winthrop public schools in 1946, after setting multiple long-standing records as a Winthrop High basketball player. He was also a member of the track and football teams, was captain of the tumbling team, and was later inducted into the Winthrop High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He matriculated at The University of Massachusetts on a football scholarship and graduated from there in1950 with a BA in history. He served honorably as a first lieutenant in the Air Force and was stationed in Korea during the war. He worked for 38 years in the Frank Cushman Associates Transportation Consulting company, becoming a partner in the ‘80s.
In 1952, he married Cynthia Kotker, and had sons Raphael, David, and Peter. In 1978, he married Barbara Hirschberg Bernson, welcoming her children Laura, Steven, and Linda into his family. He remained happily married to Barbara for the next 49 years.
He is survived by his wife and children, his six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024 at 1:00pm at the Dana Chapel in the Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, 350 Grove Street, West Roxbury, MA 02132. Burial will follow at Adath Jeshurun Cemetery.
