Dr. Mark Bloomberg

Dr. Mark Bloomberg, aged 75, of Sudbury passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Care One in Concord, following an 11 month struggle with anoxic brain damage. He was at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on October 24, 2023, ready to head home after a lovely three week vacation in Japan and Korea, when he went into cardiac arrest. Medical personnel were able to get his heart beating again, but not before he suffered permanent brain injury due to lack of oxygen.

Mark was the beloved husband (for 54 years) of Judy Holtzman Bloomberg, father of David Bloomberg and Sara Jackson (husband Bill Jackson), and grandfather of Sara and Bill’s children Sophie, Alex, Matthew, and Theo. His two siblings pre-deceased him, but he has two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he is a graduate of Trenton Central High School, as well as Boston University (BA), Rutgers Medical School (MD), and Northeastern University (MBA). After completing a medical residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, he worked as an internist in Waltham for about a dozen years before leaving clinical practice and using his medical skills to work as a physician executive in the newly developing field of medical management. He also spent many years teaching medical quality improvement in a degree program for mid-career physicians run by Harvard University.

One of Mark’s favorite things to do was travel. He and his wife loved to go to lesser known destinations where the inhabitants lived very different lifestyles from their own. Together, Mark and Judy went to approximately 130 countries. Some of their favorites were Papua New Guinea, Mongolia, Ethiopia, and Bhutan, although they had a special place in their hearts for France, where they lived for an entire year from 2002 to 2003.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 6 at 1pm, at Congregation Beth El of the Sudbury River Valley, 105 Hudson Road, Sudbury, MA. Burial will follow at Beit Olam Cemetery in Wayland (accessed from the Wayland Town Cemetery off Route 27). Memorial observance will be held at the home of the deceased on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Congregation Beth El.
