Evelyn (Louise) Weisler Kamman was born September 8, 1922 in Rochester, New York, to parents Sarah Weiss Weisler and Morris Weisler. She was 91 years when she died peacefully at the Belmont Manor, in Belmont, Massachusetts on December 13, 2013.
Evelyn was the youngest child, and only daughter, of Sarah and Morris Weisler. She grew up in Rochester, and attended Monroe High School and the University of Rochester for a nursing degree. Her brothers, Leonard Weisler of Rochester, New York, and Irving Weisler of Greensboro, North Carolina, predeceased her. Her surviving brother, Raymond Weisler resides in Los Angeles, California.
Evelyn was married in during WWII to Zora Kamman of Rochester, New York, and later divorced. Their three daughters survived her: Jean K. Burling of Cornish, New Hampshire, Judith Kliban Bixby of Hana, Hawaii, and Elizabeth K. Park of Watertown, Massachusetts. She had two grandsons: Jonathan Burling of Monterey, California, and Alexander Park of Boulder, Colorado. Eight nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews survive her.
Evelyn raised her family in Gardner, Massachusetts, where she was actively involved in the community. She was an independent, intelligent, hard working and dedicated woman, to her family and her community. She enjoyed homemaking, but also she had a shrewd business and financial acumen, which she used, together with her husband, building the family business. She also used her talent to become a sophisticated investor. While living in Gardner, Evelyn was an avid supporter of the Girl Scouts of America, and was the chief volunteer for the Girl Scouts in Gardner for 10 years. She was actively involved in her children schools, as member and leader of the PTA. She took pride in the accomplishments of her daughters and her grandsons. Her door was always open to friends and family members.
Upon leaving Gardner, Evelyn moved Rochester, NY and then to Newton, Massachusetts where she lived for almost forty years. She worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston for over 25 years as deputy to the Nursing Administrator, ultimately becoming responsible for the recruitment and the hiring of nurses at the VA hospital. In her profession, she led by example. She was devoted to her profession, and especially enjoyed her years as a nursing educator. She frequently volunteered at the Pine Street Homeless Shelter in Boston for years.
Evelyn will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline, Massachusetts on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Alzheimer Foundation in her name.
