Al often said that he had a good life. He felt lucky to have been given opportunities as the son of Russian immigrants, through the GI bill, his education, from Lawrence, MA, to Harvard, to Columbia Law School, excellent work situations, lifelong friends, and a great family he loved. He never stopped assisting people who sought his legal skills and advice.
As a highly regarded labor lawyer at Edwards and Angell, he had clients such as Stop and Shop, MacDonald’s, the New England Daily News Association, the Big East Basketball Conference, and the Brookline School Committee. He was the recipient of the Cushing-Gavin Labor Guild’s Attorney-Management award and spoke elegantly at the assembly of union and management people, saying that they shared many common goals, which brought the attendees to their feet cheering his words.
He was president of Newton Fair Housing in the 1960s, during which time he convinced the town to welcome METCO. He was on the Board of Directors of CJP, and named an honorary director for life. More recently he became a member of the Retired Men’s Group of MetroWest, for which he wrote interesting biographies of new members. During his retirement he was on the Board of Directors of Roxbury Youthworks, founded by Judge Julian Houston, to help court-involved youth. He also excelled at pro bono legal work using the phone with his skills of persuasion, fortitude, and sense of justice.
In November, 2019, Al was badly injured in a fall that led to severe 4-limb paralysis. He had limited use of his hands and arms, and he couldn’t walk. Though he was dependent on others, friends and relatives came by often to visit him because he continued to follow the news and was a witty, self-deprecating, perceptive conversationalist.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Phyllis (Goldberg) Glazerman, daughter, Susan Gabel of Zefat, Israel (Yaakov Gabel), and their ten children — Yosef, Miriam Etta, Gedalia Nachman, Sarah, Noson Avraham, Eliezer Shlomo, Chaim Pinchas, Moshe, David and Leah — and 28 grandchildren; Michael Glazerman of Natick and his daughter Sophia, and Shulamit Glazerman, of Davis California (Jay Rosenheim) and their children, Hillel, Leah, Eitan and Meirav.
He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Lola Dickerman, and her husband Kenny. He leaves his beloved siblings, Leon Glazerman and wife Ruth, and Ruth Smith, sister-in-law Jeanne Goldberg, brother-in-law Ernest Friedlander, and many legal associates, lifelong friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Donations in his memory may be made to Roxbury Youthworks, the Boston Chapter of the United Spinal Association, or Congregation Dorshei Tzedek. The funeral will be at Stanetsky’s in Brookline (and streamed live), 10:30 AM Friday, followed by burial at Temple Emeth Memorial Park.
