King, Brentwood, TN; and her son and daughter-in-law, Denton Reeves and Patricia King, Memphis, TN; Also preceded in death: Parents, Lloyd Lewis Smith (La Belle, MO) and Julia Marvine Manston (Atlanta, GA); grandparents, Charles Manston (von Manstein) and Lora Castleberry (Atlanta, GA) and sister Kathryn Marilyn Smith Moon.
Survived by children Steven Manston King (Kimberly), Franklin, TN; Donna Evelyn King, Spring Hill, TN; Christopher Bentley King (Kathleen), Brentwood, TN and Douglas Moore King (Kimberly), Colorado Springs, CO; 8 grandchildren: Patrick Manston Harrison (Claire), Andrew Michael King (Kristin), Julianna Christan Harrison, Jonathan Bentley King (Ashira), Lauren King Thompson (Scott), Thomas Reeves King (Alejandra), Collin Woodward King and Hunter Adams King; 10 great-grandchildren: Jayden Alonzo McKinney, Alexia Jade McKinney, Sophia Craina King, Yosef Isaac King, Addison Juliana McKinney, Chana King, Charlotte Adair King, Davis Manston King, Ella Miriam King, and Ahron Alexander Hirsch King
Born in Glendale, California, Mrs. King had a brief Hollywood career as a child model and actress, performing in stage musicals with the Peggy Vane Studio. After appearing in two movies: “Sutter’s Gold with Edward Arnold, “Maytime” with Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy, she was signed with Hal Roach Studios “Our Gang” (Little Rascals) with friend Spanky McFarland. At the sudden death of her mother in June 1937 and the tragic automobile accident of her father shortly thereafter, Joanne moved to Atlanta, Georgia to live with her maternal grandmother, Lora Castleberry Manston (von Manstein).
She attended St. Mary’s School, Sewanee, TN, Anderson College in Anderson, South Carolina and studied music at Valdosta State College for Women in Valdosta, Georgia; competed as a pianist annually at George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee and attended National Music Camp at the University of Michigan in Interlochen, Michigan. As a longtime resident of Williamson County, she was a member of Brentwood United Methodist Church, the Chancel Choir, Music Library and the Robert I. Moore Class; volunteer and Life Member of Friends of the Brentwood Library; Life Member of the American Iris Society, serving as an Administrative officer, Regional Vice President of Region 7 and a national Master Judge; affiliated with the Middle TN Iris Society and charter member in the development of Ellington Agriculture Center’s Iris Display Garden; other interests included Nashville Children’s Theater and the Middle Tennessee Pony Club. As a Brentwood resident, she was an early advocate of River Park while serving on the Park Board and she was a member of Brentwood Country Club.
Family visitation will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 10-11 AM and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM at The Brentwood United Methodist Church with Dr. Davis Chappell officiating and Dr. Michael Easley, Stonebridge Bible Church providing “family remembrance”. The R. I. Moore Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: The American Heart Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
