William, the son of Robert (Harris) Herriott, Jr. and Annie L. Davis, was born on April 8, 1944, in Washington, D.C. at Gallinger Hospital on a night that rained, snowed, sleeted, and hailed,
according to his mother! His family was among the first to move into the new community of
Glenarden, MD in Prince George’s County. He received his education in the PG County Public School System, after which he worked at various jobs and traveled back and forth between Pittsburgh, PA and Maryland.
William enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1972 and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. From there he was sent to Viet Nam twice. He was married in 1974 before his discharge the same year. They moved to Nebraska for a short while (staying together less than a year); then he moved back to MD. Their divorce was finalized in 1975.
William and Adrienne met on August 1, 1975, in a grocery store parking lot; her car had cut off,
and he got it started again. A real friendship developed, and, after almost a year and a half, they decided to be married on December 18, 1976, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Washington, D.C. They celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary on December 18, 2021, on ZOOM with their three children and oldest granddaughter officiating. Many family members and friends were in attendance for the happy occasion.
William worked off and on throughout his years as an auto mechanic. In 1980 he went to work for the state of MD at the Great Oaks Center for patients with mental/physical disabilities. He later worked for the PG County Public School System for 15 years until his retirement in 2005 after an injury on the job rendered him unable to continue working.
Although Bill remained fairly active in the years after he retired, medical issues began taking their toll on his health. He was diabetic, was diagnosed as being legally blind in 2014, then was determined to be in the early stages of Dementia in 2017. His family (wife, children, and grandchildren) took him on many travels, and he spent holidays plus special event days with them all, whom he loved dearly!
His final years he spent in the loving care of his wife Adrienne at their home, where they shared
many moments talking- a lot, singing to the (mostly oldies) music played by ALEXA, eating together, holding hands (“One day he pulled my hand close to him, gazed in my eyes, kissed my hand three times, then smiled!). We would snuggle and enjoy each other’s company in many ways. Bill also had a three-year old snuggle buddy named Massimo William, his only grandson.
Bill passed away quietly at home on Friday, October 14, 2022, in the AM.
William was predeceased by daughter Julie in 2020. (His parents, several brothers & sisters also predeceased him). He leaves to mourn his passing: Wife- Adrienne; Sons –Stephen, William, Jr. (Carmen); Daughter-Bonnie; Grandchildren- Tiana Wright (Bonnie), Gabriella (Wm., Jr.), Massimo (Bonnie); Brothers-Robert Harris, Jerome Davis (Gladys), Quincy Davis (Sophia); Nephew Marvin Davis; a host of cousins, other relatives, friends, and Honorary Herriott Family Members Muriel Logan and Mary Wicks.
