Vincent Sylvanus Jones PhD, the only son of Antoinette Banks Corprew and stepson of Elbert Crawford Corprew, born on December 23, 1947, transitioned on Saturday, January 16, 2021. Throughout his life, he was affectionately called Butch and known for his boyish pranks, playful teasing and jokes. He loved music and particularly enjoyed listening to, singing with and/or performing a one man show to James Brown, Issac Hayes, Billy Joel and Luther Vandross. Vincent was also noted for his love for his family, friends and for his “Big Heart”.
Vincent attended Saint Martin’s where he was an altar boy and John Carroll parochial schools of the Archdiocese of Washington. His High School Diploma was earned from Anacostia, a District of Columbia Public School. During 1968-1972, he attended The District of Columbia Teachers College, was nominated, elected and served as the President of his Freshman Class, nominated, elected and served as President of Student Government. Vincent also played on both the football and baseball teams.
While at DC Teachers College, he pledged and became a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Upon graduation he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He continued his studies at Bowie State University where he earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Vincent completed his graduate studies at American University and was awarded a Doctorate Degree in Psychology. After internships, post-doctoral studies, and testing he became a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a membership in the American Psychological Association. His focus was on patients with mental illnesses and the drug addicted population. In order to provide the best care for his patients/clients he continued to update and hone his skills. When former patients/clients would see him they were always happy to update him how their journey was going.
Some of Vincent’s life experiences included working for The United States Postal Service, the District of Columbia Jail and as a United States Marshall. In addition, Vincent worked and volunteered on the Campuses of Bowie State and Howard Universities as well as in the community and churches. He also presided over many workshops, with an emphasis on Psycho Drama. Vincent also was a member of the Bachelor-Benedict Club and the John Carroll Society.
Vincent leaves to treasure his memories, a son, David Seth Freeland, a stepdad Elbert C. Corprew, a significant other, Frances Buckson; Cousins, Oteylia Smith, Denise Collymoore, the Faulks, the Mora’s, the Lynches, and a host of other family members and friends. In addition, he was preceded in death by his mother, Antoinette Corprew; aunts, Josephine Smith and Bernice Johnson; uncle, Vincent Johnson; cousins, Saundra Pacheco and Andree Moore.
