Tawanna Yvette Young, affectionately known as “Quanna,” was born in Washington, D.C., to Samuel Young Jr. and Regina Veronica Young, on October 31, 1954. She attended D.C. Public Schools and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School.
She worked for many years at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Geico, Providence Hospital, and most recently, as a federal government employee with the Social Security Administration.
When she was not working, she enjoyed reading novels by her favorite author James Patterson, listening to music, and mastering crossword puzzles and picture puzzles with her grandchildren. Yet, supporting her sons in sports and spending quality time with her grandchildren brought her the most joy. As a single mother, she managed to send all her children to college as recipients of either an athletic or academic scholarship. Tawanna’s children were her pride and joy, and she ensured that she never missed a school concert, activity, or sporting event, bringing great comfort to them, knowing she was cheering them on in the audience.
She leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Darrell, Simeon, Zachary, and Nicholas; two daughters-in-law, Jennifer, and Anissa; two grandsons, Camden, and Simeon Jr.; three granddaughters Olivia, Gabrielle, and Simone; and three Nephews, Tracy, Danny, and Harvey. Her devoted friend, Darrell Garner Sr., in addition to a host of relatives and close friends, will forever remember her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Regina Young; two sisters, Belinda and Beverly; grandparents, Arbury Swann and Hortense Reese; and her son Benjamin and niece Jawan.
