moved to Charlotte, N.C. She was the fourth child of the late Rev. Fred B. Gamble & Annie
Gamble. She received her education in Charlotte, N.C. After finishing High School, she
attended the School of Cosmetology, after which she started and ran a thriving business in
North Carolina and later also owned and operated her own business in the Washington, D.C.
area where she worked as a gifted cosmetologist until her retirement.
Pauline accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at the
Antioch Church in Charlotte, N.C. She served as the church Secretary and on the Welcome
Committee. In 1954 Pauline came to Washington, D.C. where she met and married the late
Artie Switzer. To this union four children were born. Artie, Jr., Addison, Penelope (Penny) and
Alvin. She also has an older daughter, Edna Gamble.
In 1956, Pauline joined Greater New Hope Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Rev.
Charles H. Hamilton. She immediately joined the Hospitality Club, where she served as
President for over 20 years. Under her leadership, the club grew tremendously. She
established the color red for the club. She also served on Usher Board II for over twenty years.
Pauline was a faithful and willing worker at the church. She was always ready and willing to
support any endeavor of the Church. Her favorite scripture was the Psalm 27.
Her most enjoyable time was spent with her kids, grandkids, friends and most recently – her
great grands. One of her favorite past times was gardening and spending time outdoors. She
loved the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, where she would cook a feast in
anticipation of spending time with family. She loved having a good time and making people
laugh.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her kids, Edna, Artie (Carmille), Addison (Brenda), Penny
(Melvin) and Al, her grandchildren; Andre, Bykia, Bertreca, TaNika, Abigail, Alden, Aaron, as
well seven great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces and nephews as well as her adopted
children and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Artie Switzer, her parents – Rev. Fred and Annie
Gamble, her three brothers – Arthur, Otho and Daniel, four sisters - Freddie Mae Davis, Louise
Abrams, Nancy Clemons and Mamie Perry. Pauline was the last one standing!
