Joseph Jerome Wood

Joseph Jerome Wood, lovingly known to many as “Joe Joe,” transitioned Friday, November 29, 2024, at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, Virginia.

He was born to John E. Wood Sr, and Mildred D. Wood at D.C. General Hospital in Washington D.C. on August 22, 1942.

His parents predeceased Joe, his sister Mary Lucille Brodie, brother Charles H. Wood, grandson Christopher J. Wood, and niece Tamara Roney.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Kim); one grandson Brian A. McCray, Jr., three great-grandchildren Christopher J. Wood Jr., Chace R. Eke, Cameron J. Wood, brothers John (Jacqueline), Michael (Shirley), Jerry (Vallie), one sister Patricia and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to celebrate his legacy.

Joe was raised in Barry Farms S.E. Washington D.C. He attended Birney Elementary, Douglas Junior High, Kelly Miller Junior High, and graduated from Spingarn High School in 1960.

He had a passion for participating in basketball and track and field during his formative years and carried that passion into high school. His accomplishments included the following:

1957- Spingarn Cross Country City Championship

Won the Championship in the 880-yard run and mile at American University

1960 – Set a high school record in the 880-yard run

1960 – All Metropolitan

During his participation in the recreation department, Joe lost only once during those years.

Additionally, Joe attended Morgan State, Tennessee State, and the University of the District of Columbia.

In 1964, Joe met and married Charlotte A. Redd. From this union, they had a daughter Kimberly Renee Wood.

He started his first job with The United Planning Organization (UPO) in 1966. His exceptional work ethic and passion as a Job Counselor enabled him to connect deeply with young men and women. He earned their love and respect by fostering meaningful relationships with youth and his colleagues. During the summer months, Joe worked with Petey Green, a D.C. legend, to provide jobs for the youth. Joe often placed his workers within the DC public schools to assist the custodial staff, who appreciated their support.

In his spare time, Joe played basketball with the D.C. Old-Timers. They traveled to different cities to participate in various competitions.

Joe retired from UPO in March 2006.

He stayed in touch with his Spingarn friends, The D.C. Old-Timers, and many others by attending picnics, Golden Corral lunches, and other social events.

Recognizing John Wood’s presence and care when Joe’s health began to decline was a source of comfort and strength to his niece. He attended several doctor appointments to discuss Joe’s health conditions. On several occasions, he went out of his way to check on Joe daily at his home, ensuring that he had a meal, and his medicine was taken on time. He also assisted him to and from his scheduled dialysis appointments.

Joe was admitted to Virginia Hospital Center a few months later, where he received daily visits from John Wood and Patricia Wood Foreman. They, tirelessly, ensured Joe had blankets, pajamas, and meals, attending to his every need with care and compassion, during his hospital stay.

Joe’s cherished companion, Deborah C. Thompson, predeceased him in 2017. Much appreciation to her family Desiree, Dianna, Denise, Tony (Darnie), Greg (Deanie), and Norman (Mia) for staying in touch with Joe and always lending a helping hand when needed.

Joe’s daughter Kim, the love of his life, was always an unwavering presence – a source of love and support. He always said he was truly blessed to have a loving daughter who had his back. When he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2018, she ensured he kept his doctor's appointments, took his medication regularly, and was right there accompanying him, making sure all his personal affairs and medical needs were taken care of. He persevered and never gave up.

These small acts of kindness meant a lot and were appreciated.

In addition to all his accomplishments, Joe was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend who will truly be missed.
