James was born in Washington, DC on April 29, 1935 to Ting Guey and Leng Shee Yuen. He was a humble and unassuming man, who valued his independence. He served in the US Army and on returning home, he worked in private industry as a draftsman for many years. He later worked in the dry cleaning business before retiring in the 1990’s.

James was a loving caregiver to his late mother. He loved to be around his large family which included nine brothers and sisters and their families. James never missed a family get-together or celebration. He was dearly loved by his nieces and nephews, and he was always happy and smiled a lot in their presence. He had a competitive streak, especially when he played cornhole with them.
