Mary Elizabeth Jones

Mary “Libby” Elizabeth Jones (Baxley), 84, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida. She was born on June 27, 1940, in Williamsburg, South Carolina, to Charlie J. Baxley and Ollie “Ruth” Baxley (Howell).

Libby graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1961 and found her calling as a nurse. After moving to Florida, she began a fulfilling career at Orlando Regional Medical Center, eventually becoming the head nurse of her floor. She loved caring for others just as much as she enjoyed spending time with her own family.

Libby will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Alyssa McConnaughey, David McConnaughey, and Katie Jones as well as her siblings, Connie Maiorine (Baxley) and Donnie Baxley. She was preceded in death by her beloved children, Deborah McConnaughey (Jones) and Jerome “Buzzy” Jones, and brother Charles Baxley.

Anyone who knew Libby would tell you about her infectious smile and her many passions—gardening, beach days, sewing, crafts, and especially dancing. Her home in Winter Park, FL, was often filled with laughter, good music, and the warmth of close family gatherings.

A gathering of friends and family is scheduled for 12pm -1pm on March 22, 2025, at Hillsborough Memorial Funeral Home in Brandon, FL. A memorial service will follow at 1pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of this incredible woman who brought so much love and light to those around her.
