Chuck was born in February, 1935 in Cadiz, OH. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Ohio State and then served as a Radar Officer flying F101B Voodoo fighter aircraft. After serving honorably in the USAF, he completed his Doctorate at Temple University in 1966. “Dr. Smith” began teaching in the College of Physical Education and Exercise Sciences, at the University of South Florida in 1967. He was a fixture in the College for over 40 years and eventually named a Professor Emeritus. He had three sons, Jed, Clay and Kyle.
Chuck had a passion for physical fitness and for volunteering. He was an active member of many charities and church outreach programs. He was known for his friendly manner and outgoing personality, and his kind and compassionate spirit.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, Donald, mother, Helen, brother, Dwain, and son Clay. He is survived by his wife Fran, his sons Jed and Kyle, numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home, 2323 West Brandon Blvd, Brandon, FL 33511. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 1:00 PM, 2323 West Brandon Blvd, Brandon, FL 33511.
