Wayne was born in Spiro, OK on July 13, 1936 to Garland Leslie and Vida Elma Defoor. Wayne graduated from Spiro High School in Spiro, OK. After high school he entered the Navy and served his Country from 1954-1975, serving 21 years of active duty and 9 years Retired Fleet Service. He completed tours in Vietnam and retired as a Master Chief Gunner’s Mate. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in 1981 from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI.
Wayne was married to Dorothy Jean Emmons on November 5, 1960 in Altadena, CA.
Wayne was the Director of Safety and Security from 1975-1999 at Salve Regina University and served at the Portsmouth, RI Police Department from 1979-1999. He volunteered for the Portsmouth Little League over 10 years, he also played and coached the Youth League Basketball. He also worked with Special Needs children and adults through the Swimming/water programs. He and Dot finally retired and moved to Fort Myers, FL in 2000. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and received the 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He was an active member and usher of the St. Raphael Catholic Church. Wayne was an avid volunteer for various charities within the community and always willing to lend a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Garland L., Vida E. (Defoor) Scarberry and step-father T.R. Scarberry. Brothers Earl, Joe D., James.
Wayne was survived by his wife, Dorothy J. of Sun City Center, FL; daughter Deborah J. and husband Keith Poole of Polo, IL; David W. and wife Kay Carlile of Brandon, FL and Gregory Harold of Sanford, FL. Grandchildren Cody Carlile, Adam Poole and wife Andrea, Megan Poole and Alison Poole. Brothers Troy and wife Vickie of Tulsa, OK; Roy and wife Linda of Spiro, OK; Jerry and wife Ruth Scarberry of Keota, OK; Carl Scarberry of Cowlington, OK; Sister Mary Worth and husband James French of Spiro, OK.
