On Tuesday, November 16th, Roy Michael Havelin, loving husband, father, and Poppy to his grandchildren, passed away at the age of 71. Roy was born in Morristown, New Jersey on August 30, 1950 to Shirley Fliegel Havelin and Joseph Havelin. He was the second of three sons, growing up between his older brother Sanford and younger brother Lloyd. Roy was raised in Netcong, New Jersey, where his family owned the Hostess Shop. He graduated from Netcong High School in 1969 and then worked in the shipping department of Howmet Corporation, which later became Alcoa, for 36 years. Roy met the love of his life, Donna, on a blind date, and they were married in 1976. Roy lived in Lafayette and Branchville, New Jersey where he and his wife raised two children, Jenna and Joseph.
Roy was an avid reader and self-taught scholar who loved learning about history. For many years, he enjoyed running and swimming, and he also participated in 150 mile charity bike races for Multiple Sclerosis. Sadly, Roy was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2010. Roy is best loved for his sense of humor, appetite for a homemade meal, swimming and kibitzing with friends at the local YMCA, and love of his family and friends. Roy never missed an episode of Jeopardy and watched regularly until his passing. Roy passed away on a bright fall morning surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his daughter, Jenna, and her partner, Thom; his son, Joseph, and his wife, Jennifer; his brother Sanford, and his wife, Susan; and his two beautiful granddaughters, Olivia and Julia. The family has asked that any gifts be made as donations in his name to the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter (als-ny.org) or the Sussex County YMCA. There will be a memorial service held in Roy’s honor, date to be determined.
