Dear Pushpa and family:
It is with great pain that we have to write this note to you. It is unfortunate that we could not see him in person as we were here in Bangalore/India. Ever since we came to know him when we moved to the US, Thamanna (he did not want us to call him either Bill or uncle!) has been very close to us, talking about family, connections, and most of all his singing. Until a few years ago, he used to sing bass a member of the church choir.  Most of all is when we were in the US, we had our singing sessions almost on a daily basis - these were all the wonderful Mangalore hymns in Kannada and Tulu. It was surprising that he knew the verses from memory of all the songs that he chose which was fantastic! I have not seen another person who had such a wonderful memory and cherished all the Basel Mission hymns. I, personally, will miss him immensely as even in the last few months, I did make it a point to talk to him and keep his spirits up - he loved talking in Tulu (a dialect in South Kanara district). Pushpa - please note that you are not alone. We will still continue to call you from time to time. You are not alone. Dear Pushpa Aunty,

First of all the most sincere condolences to you and your family from the Winston family (Richie and Jane). 

What can I add here that hasn’t already been said? Dear Thamma Uncle was a beautiful soul whose personality radiated joy. The two of you were made for each other. I thank Dad for insisting we take Mum and him to visit you’ll decades ago in Montreal. Priya was only 3 at the time (30 now). Priya and I visited you’ll a number of times after that, in Toronto too where my friends and I got to taste Uncle’s home brewed beers! It is a testimony to Uncle’s (and yours) beautiful, open-minded nature that even my friends who only met you’ll once remember Uncle with great fondness.  Priya remembers how you played the piano and uncle would sing nursery rhymes to her.

Uncle lives on in all the lovely memories he created for so many, my family included.

Pushpa I’m so sorry to hear about Willie’s passing. I think you called a few days ago but I didn’t pick up because my nieces were with me for a few days from Buffalo and London and that was a lot of going on in Joe’s house at the time. I remember Willie from Bombay days when you had just got married and after that I loved to hear Willie singing specially in Montreal. I shall call you in a few days. In the meantime my heart felt sympathy to you and the family.

William ( Bill )  and my family go way back to the Basil Mission in Mangalore and later Madras and finally to Montreal.
My grandmother Dr Helen Mathews and her sister Mabel Gammon were related to Bill and to his elder brother Charmu  Shiri ( Marina and Robbie Shiri )
Pushpa and Bill later became firm friends with my Mother’s sister Nancy Whittam in Montreal.
They also stayed with my Dad and Mum 
Colonel Ron and Lorna Mathews in Bangalore, India.

Fond memories remain of good times shared in the past and I extend my deepest sympathies to all the family members.
May you find comfort and strength in Christ .. to bear your sad loss.

Not many people can smile and sing at the same time... But Bill could. ...A memory and a gift that I continue to carry with me. Dear Pushpa auntie, I learnt about the demise of dear Thamma uncle with great sadness. He was an exceptional human being, with all the finest qualities of head and heart. Always bubbling with life, he used to spread cheer and happiness among all those he met or interacted with. He never missed a chance to call on  and have a lively chat with his numerous old acquaintances or  with the most distant member of his family,  whenever he had a chance. No doubt, he lived his long life to the fullest and enjoyed every moment of it.

Our heartfelt condolences to Pushpa and her family on the passing away of dear Bill.
Bill had known my paternal grandfather since the 1940s  while he was doing his BA at the Madras Christian College . He used to visit my grandfather and our family  along with Dr. Prabhavathi Kunder (nee Aiman)  who was doing her medical degree in Madras.
I got in touch with him after many years while researching genealogical information. We had a great friendship discussing family ties, general chat and things about Mangalore and Basel Mission .
We will miss his jovial conversations . May his soul rest in Peace.

It is with deep sadness that we had the news of the demise 0f our Bill Shiri. He was a colleague of Lily from the High School of Montreal days in the early seventies. Both Bill and Pushpa became our much loved family friends. We used to visit them both at the Mississauga condo and their attractive nest in the heart of Toronto. Those visits were combined with our visit to Hamilton where the Thomas family lived. But the pandemic and  our own growing immobility made such visits impossible. Still we kept in touch though rather infrequently.

Bill was a very charming person (Pushpa is no less) and he loved life and loved people. He loved singing and he kept on singing almost unto the end. He will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Pushpa and their children, grand children and their great grand children,

William was one of our most loved and respected teachers. His kind and joyful nature will always be remembered. 

Although I had lost touch with him after finishing high school in 1959, it was a special treat 50 years later to see him once more at our class reunion in Bombay (Mumbai). It is with deepest sadness that I say goodbye to him once again, this time with a finality that only a funeral can bring.

William, I hope to see you on the other side...

The memory I have of spending time with uncle and Pushpa at Sea Queen Hotel, will always be cherished. He was someone who had deep knowledge of family connections and he valued it. Though he was elder to me by more than 30 years, yet I never felt any generation gap with him. He was really jovial and his smile and laughter charmed everyone.
