Born in New Chelsea, Newfoundland, the second eldest of seven children to the late Delilah and Harold Belbin, Joyce, at an early age, felt a deep sense of call to officer ship, and in 1943, entered the Salvation Army Newfoundland training college from the Carbonear Corps. A year later, she was commissioned and served as a single field officer before entering nurse’s training at Grace General Hospital in St. John’s, Newfoundland. During her nursing tenure, Joyce was appointed to various positions throughout five Canadian divisions. All through her life, Joyce’s compassion, sweet, calm, and soft disposition, her sacrifice, and quiet strength, coupled with her intelligence and skill, had healed patients, comforted the hearts who are seeking guidance in life, and had brought smiles, and warm feet, when knitting slippers and creating beautiful afghans and generously gifting them.
In June 1981, Joyce married Captain Albert Murkin until Bert passed away in 1998. A while later when Joyce was reacquainted with a teenage friend, Raymond Robbins, a widowed Bandsman from the Cambridge Corps, more than half a century of lost friendship was renewed, and they married in 2002. Ray predeceased Joyce in 2014.
Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her sister Daisy (Seymour) Guy, Springdale, NL; brother Walter (Cettina) Belbin, Brampton; members of extended families (Murkin and Robbins); many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her sister Edna (Gordon) Pynn, Springdale, NL; brother Ronald (Marie) Belbin, Toronto; sister Hazel (Frank) Palmer, Corner Brook, NL, and brother Donald (Jean) Belbin, Toronto.
Joyce will also be remembered for her strong bond with sisters, brothers, and family. Spring and gardening brought her much joy and her skills with plants and flowers of all kinds were unmatched. The greatest of all, Joyce will be remembered for her constant trust and firm faith in her Heavenly Father, whom she loved and served since childhood.
