Esther Mitchell Hunter passed away aged 99 on May 17th at Brampton Civic Hospital after a short illness. She was a beloved wife to the late Robert Hunter, mother to Bill (Gabrielle) and Cathy, and ‘Nana’ to Meaghan, Sarah and Kerry. Predeceased by her sister Jo and survived by her sister Ruby.
Born in Belfast, Esther immigrated as a child to Canada. She balanced raising a family, establishing a career, and serving the church and her local community throughout her life. Esther was a member of a myriad of community-based organizations. Of particular note, Esther was a lifetime member of the United Church Women and the Eastern Star.
The City of Brampton honoured Esther’s dedication to the Brampton community by awarding her the Long-Term Service Award for her continued work with St. Andrew’s Food Cupboard. Esther also received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award from the province for 45+ years of service to Emmanuel United Church.
She will be sorely missed by all those who had the opportunity to know her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 4th, 11:00 am, at Emmanuel United Church, 420 Balmoral Drive, Brampton, where Esther was an active member for 50 years. The service will follow the church’s recommended use of masks and vaccine guidelines.
Those who knew Esther will know that she especially loved flowers and spending time in her garden. That said, in lieu of flowers, Esther’s family suggests that donations please be made to those groups and causes that were especially dear to her (listed below).
