Born May 22, 1926 to the late John and Elizabeth (Wetter) Schafer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was a 1944 graduate of Baldwin High School, and later the Connelly Technical School for Engineering. After retiring from Diamond Wire Spring Co., he moved in 1995 to Eagle Village Retirement Community in Bradenton, Florida. An active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 65 years, he served as past Pennsylvania State President, Degree team member and Mayor of Eagle Village. He served in the US Air Force and in local, state and national aeries. He also was a member of the Bradenton Moose, American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 54 and Manasota Elks. A lover of music and dancing, he belonged to the Bay Chorale as a tenor.
Mr. Schafer was preceded in death by his first wife Laverne (Speicher), second wife Dorothy (Tuckey), brothers George and Jack, sisters Esther Shafer and Edna Miller and step-daughter Lynda Brooks. He is survived by son Mark (Barb) and step-daughter Leigh Ann Tuckey, and by grandchildren Jessica, Emily, James, Jordan, Madison, Scott and Robert and great-grandchildren Dylan and Eilee. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
A Memorial service will be held at Manasota Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, September 29th at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception at Eagle Village. Memorials may be made to Manasota Operation Troop Support and United Cerebral Palsy of Sarasota and Manatee, Inc.
