Nancy Newby (formerly Garretson) 68 years old of Palmetto Florida passed away on May 8, 2024 with her four children by her bedside. Nancy was a lifelong resident of Capy May County New Jersey before joining her two daughters in Florida 2 years ago. Although she loved the warmth of Florida, she often still visited her family in New Jersey.
Nancy was a longtime employee of the Cape May Lewes Ferry before moving to Florida where she began her final career at the Publix bakery. She took pride in her jobs and loved interacting with people.
Nancy was a hard worker no matter what she was doing and loved doing household and yard projects. In her spare time, you would often find her “fixing” things around the house/yard, anything from plumbing and electrical to building things, painting, doing drywall, or just puttering around the yard in her flower beds or re-doing her landscaping. She was truly a handy woman - a “super” woman to all who were blessed to know her.
Nancy was a Godly woman who loved Jesus with all her heart and trusted him impeccably. Her faith was child-like in so many ways. She knew that when she prayed and asked God for something that God would give it to her - even a specific thing like a flower couch with a hide-a-bed in it. Very shortly after praying for a specific thing, she would find it put at the curb by a neighbor or some random person would bless her with it. This happened repeatedly for her and some of us would often tease her and say she must be God’s “favorite” child. She was truly a prayer warrior and continually prayed for the salvation of her family and loved ones. She shared her faith with so many people and attended Bayside Community Church in Lakewood Ranch, Florida (served as a greeter) and attended Lighthouse Church in Burleigh New Jersey.
Nancy is survived by her 4 children (Cynthia and Sean DeWeese, Ruth and Matt Gray, Matt and Dolly Newby, Charlotte and James Ridings). She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren (2 more on the way and arriving later this year), her sisters (Charlotte and Kurt Himstedt, Linda Garretson, Darlene and Joe Fulton), her sister-in-law (Ellen Peterson), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Although her passing has left a hole in our hearts, we know that she ran into Jesus’s arms at the moment of her passing and we have the confidence that we will see her again.
A celebration of life will be held in New Jersey on Saturday June 1, 2024. Please contact a family member for more details if you are interested in attending. All friends and family members are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations to be sent to Bayside Community Church to their Kingdom Builder’s mission as this was very close to her heart. You can give via their website at https://bayside.churchcenter.com/giving/to/kingdom-builders-general-fund or contact them via telephone at 941-755-8600 to arrange sending a donation via a different manner.
