AUGUST 17, 1931 – OCTOBER 29, 2020
Nancy Salome passed away peacefully on October 29, 2020, at home with her husband of 67 years, Lind Lee Sanford. She was born on August 17th, 1931 in Freemont, Ohio to Lina Henrietta Boss and Aldor Oscar Cornelius Peterson. Nancy grew up in Ames, Iowa and met Lind on a shuffleboard court during their freshman year at Iowa State. In 1953, they married upon graduating from Iowa State, she in art and he in horticulture, and began their life together. Over the next four years they traveled the USA together as Lind served in the Army and they had three sons, Mark, Stephen and Daniel. In 1960, after Lind received his doctorate in Plant Genetics, they moved the family to Aberdeen, Idaho. Here, Nancy began to pursue her love of painting and art, a career she would continue for the next 60 years.
Nancy initially worked in realistic oil painting, and then moved onto abstract art, her true love. Once the family moved to Glenn Dale, Maryland in 1965, Nancy took various art classes at the University of MD in sculpture, print making and painting. In 1975, Nancy became one of the founding members of the Torpedo Factory, an art collective in Alexandria, Virginia. Here she began to create in her favorite medium, hand-made paperwork. Over the course of her art career, Nancy garnered dozens of awards, grants and commissions, and accolades including from state senators and community officials.
In the late 70’s, she and Lind began to travel the world going to Europe, India, Central America and the Caribbean. Nancy made several solo trips with her artist friends to Nepal, India, Japan and Greece. She was a student of the world and would investigate the people, food, culture and religions of any country she visited. Her paperworks began incorporating these cultural components from around the world.
Nancy was full of life and energy and will be missed by all. Her curiosity and creative nature helped make her and Lind’s life an exciting adventure through their years together. She is survived by her loving husband, Lind; her sons and daughters-in-law (Mark and Roma, Stephen and Molly, Daniel and Judith); her five grandchildren Gita (Josh), Benjamin (Bin), Christopher (Shelly), Audrey (Amber), Eric (Christine), and three great-grandchildren Skye Mala, Michael Lee and Aria.
A service is planned in the spring of 2021, at the Memorial Garden of Community Christian Presbyterian church in Bowie, Maryland. Her artwork and banners still grace this church today.
