Larry Phillip Claiborne, 82, passed away suddenly on September 25, 2024. Larry was born and raised in Lakeland, a small and loving community, in College Park, Maryland. His parents were the late Reverend Kidd and Ethel Claiborne of Lakeland.
Larry attended Prince George’s county public schools and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School. For most of his working life he was involved in the furniture delivery business doing deliveries for various places like Scan, The Design Store, and Great Beginnings, eventually moving into warehouse management. In 1978, he moved to Norcross, Georgia to open and manage a store for The Design Store. After moving back to Maryland a few years later, he began Larry’s Delivery Service which he operated for many years. When he closed the business, he went back to warehouse management until he retired.
Larry has four children whom he loved dearly, two sons Phillip “ElRahm” Claiborne and DeMion Claiborne (Sandra), Kelley Davis (Joan) and Kaitlyn Claiborne Hanlan (Kathy). Larry and Kathy were married and loved and cared for each other for over 45 years.
Larry enjoyed watching football, basketball, horse racing, action movies and playing his numbers. He was a die-hard Washington football fan, no matter what name they went by. He also loved cars, especially Corvettes, of which he had a few. He loved getting together with family and friends as often as possible and frying up some chicken or grilling some ribs, and washing it down with a few beers. He loved taking care of his home and yard and wanted them to be just so. In his later years, he fell in love with his two fur babies, Rhett and Mini, who he spoiled terribly.
Larry was always a mentor to his employees, his children and younger family members, or anyone who asked his advice. He was known for being completely honest and frank. He was also known for joking with and teasing anyone he could, whenever he could. Just ask his kids.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Kidd Claiborne, his brother, Oliver (Moe) Claiborne, his sister Erma Hackley Fullen, and his first wife, Sandra Claiborne Landu.
He lives on in the loving memories of his wife, Kathy Claiborne, his sons ElRahm (Devorah), DeMion (Tracy), his daughters Kelley Davis and Kaitlyn Claiborne Hanlan (Seann), his two sisters, Elizabeth Adams and Clarice Briscoe, his 14 grandchildren, DeMion, Brandon, Jenné, Yahkeem, Nadav, Romiel, Ramayah, Elrahm, Atyneet, Avirahm, Yhorahm, Emunah, Elazar, and Yaheed, and 14 great grandchildren. He will also live on in the hearts of many other loving family members and friends whom he also loved.
A visitation for Larry will be held Friday, October 4, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial is to follow to Maryland National Cemetery in Laurel, MD.
