Sarah Anne “Sally” Thompson (Deery) of Plymouth, MA & Boynton Beach, FL passed away on Saturday March 16, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late Thomas and Mary (Connolly) Deery on February 12, 1938 and was raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Sally attended St. Dominc’s school in Belfast and immigrated to the United States in her early 20s. She worked for Guardian Life Insurance in New York City and met her husband of 54 years, Robert C. Thompson, at a dance at the Tuxedo Ballroom in New York City. Bob and Sally married in New York in 1963 and moved to Plymouth, MA to start their family and raise four children, Christine, Sean, Annemarie, and Timothy. She began a career in social work and was employed at South Shore Community Action Council Center for a number of years.
Sally was an avid reader, gardener, and loved to travel with her friends. She also had a great sense of style and loved to shop with her sisters, daughters, and granddaughters. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and always enjoyed a good dance or party with her friends and family. Bob and Sally in their later years traveled often and bought a second home in Boynton Beach, FL to enjoy the warmer weather during the winter months (and to indulge Bob’s love of fishing, of course.) During her time in Florida, she was a member of the Red Hat Ladies as well as the Northeast Club. Sally was a smart, strong, independent, and caring wife, sister, friend, and “Nanny” who especially adored each of her grandchildren. She could often be found helping them with their homework, caring for them after school, or boasting about their accomplishments any chance she could. Sally loved to share stories of her growing up in Northern Ireland, always with a touch of her Irish wit, and a little sass. She will be so missed by her family, friends, and all those who loved her dearly.
Sally is survived by her children and their families; Christine Thompson-Colbert (Christopher) of Edgartown, MA, Sean Thompson (Donna) of Plymouth, MA, Annemarie Thompson of Sagamore Beach, MA, Timothy Thompson (Maria) of Bourne, MA and Megan Gannon of Plymouth, MA. Her grandchildren; Mairead McGonagle and her fiancé Mark Machesky of Plymouth, MA, Conor McGonagle (Ellen) of Scituate, MA, Sarah Colbert and her partner Louis Neville of Ridgewood, NY, Eamon Colbert of Ridgewood, NY, Teagan Thompson of Plymouth, MA, Brighid Thompson of Plymouth, MA, Padraig Thompson of Plymouth, MA, Olivia Thompson of Plymouth, MA, and Collin Thompson of Bourne, MA. Her siblings; Joseph Deery of Belfast, N. Ireland, Margaret Brannigan of West Deptford, NJ, and Sean Deery of Blackrock, Co. Louth, Ireland. As well as many nieces, nephews, and family in Ireland and in the United States. She is preceded in passing by her husband, Robert, and siblings; Francis Deery, Mary Quinn, Thomas Deery, Gerard Deery, and Philomena Conroy.
A private burial will be held at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, where she will be interred with her loving husband Bob.
