Eugene “Gene” Haines Morrow, Sr., a lifelong resident of Sandwich passed away peacefully on May 2, 2014. He was an U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the American Legion Post 188. He actively participated in the American Legion Honor Guard for many years.
He worked for the State of Massachusetts for more than 35 years, rounding out his career as an assistant supervisor at Shawme Crowell and Scussett State Parks. In addition, he was the Town Shellfish Warden from 1966 – 1997, Deputy Forest Warden from 1967 – 1969, and was a member of the Board of Fire Engineers from 1971 – 1978, when it was disbanded. Mr. Morrow was also a volunteer fireman for the town for many years.
He was an avid fish and shell fisherman. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining. Gene was an avid fan of the Bruins and Red Sox. He also was a talented woodworker and bird carver. In his younger years he worked for the famed Stan Gibbs making fishing lures and Hazel Blake French making jewelry.
He is survived by his children, Gene Morrow Jr., Marybeth Robichaud and her husband Al all of Sandwich, MA; John Morrow and his wife Michele of Arizona. He is a cherished grandfather of Madeline and Dillon Morrow of Arizona. He is the dear and cherished brother of Wallace Morrow, III, Barbara Morrow Gates all of Sandwich and Virginia Morrow Smith of Calverton, NY. In addition, he is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he adored. He is also survived by his former wife, Carol McArdle Morrow Taylor and his long-time companion, Betty Densmore. He was predeceased by his daughter, Ellen and sister, Joanie.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 27th from 1 – 4 p.m. (1300 -1600) at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home 154 Route 6A Sandwich, MA 02563. A Memorial Service will be held 3:30 p.m. Interment in Bayview Cemetery, Sandwich. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the American Legion Post 188 in Sandwich.
