Terry was born on March 24, 1945 in Los Angeles, California, one of 2 children born to Donald Young and Merle (Clark) Young. A standout baseball & football player in high school, he earned numerous All-League and All-City Player of the Year awards, including being named the All-Los Angeles Baseball Player of the Year. With a commitment from the Cleveland Indians out of high school, he played for their minor league team and even got to catch a game for legendary baseball player, Satchel Paige. While attending Junior College in Los Angeles, he unfortunately sustained an ankle injury that sidelined his baseball career. It was after this that he picked up his first golf club. Terry served in the military in both Korea and Vietnam. Following his military service, he returned home to Los Angeles where he pursued a career as a golf professional.
After earning his Class A PGA license, Terry began his golf career as an Assistant Golf Pro at Hillcrest Country Club in Beverly Hills, California. After just a few years, he became the Head Golf Pro at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course at the Marine Corps Air Station in Kaneohe, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. In 1979, he shot a course record round of 61. After nearly 15 years, he accepted the position as Director of Golf at Wailea Golf Club Resort on the island of Maui. He was an excellent instructor and loved teaching people the game of his ancestors from Scotland.
Terry was blessed with his great love, Janice Lynn (Black) Young. They were married on April 19, 1969 and spent 33 years together before she passed in 2002. After marrying in Los Angeles, they raised their daughters, Heather and Teryn in Hawaii on the islands of Oahu and Maui, where they lived collectively for nearly 25 years. In 1997, they relocated to Colorado, where Terry spent the next 20 years. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his children and 5 grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor, and always loved to tell a good story. He was very creative and a gifted stained glass artist, creating many memorable pieces. For the last 6 years, Terry lived in Newberg, Oregon with his daughter Heather, her husband & 2 children. He enjoyed painting, modeling and writing/creating his life story book. He took great joy in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, specifically water polo, lacrosse, karate, volleyball & gymnastics.
Terry is survived by his daughter Heather Walls and her husband Burke Walls, daughter Teryn Howell and her husband Chris Howell, his 5 grandchildren, Dawson Walls, Maile Walls, Grace Howell, Lily Howell, Emme Howell, and his brother Don Young, nephews Brent Young, Scott Young and niece Lori Garcia.
Terry will be laid to rest in Boulder, Colorado next to his beloved wife Jan. Services will be held on Friday, October 13 with a graveside service at 10:00am and a memorial service & reception at 10:45am at Crist Mortuary.
