Robert Thomas Monahan (Bob), 102, died April 12, 2021 peacefully at his home in Frederick, Colorado. He was born June 20, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY during the Spanish Flu. His father, William Monahan, sent Bob and his mother, Dorothy (White) to the Catskill Mountains to protect them from the pandemic.
Bob graduated from Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY in 1936. Following graduation, he began attending evening classes at Brooklyn Poly Tech and began his 45 year career at Bell Telephone Laboratories where he was a draftsman until his retirement in 1982. In August of 1941, Bob married Virginia Brant of Port Washington, NY.
Although always humble, he served with the U.S. Army in World War II in North Africa as a first sergeant from 1941 - 1945. His decorations and citations included: American Defense Service medal, American Service medal, European African Middle Eastern Service medal, and the World War II Victory medal. Bob was a member of the Boulder Elks Club where he was known to bring his grandchildren to swim on summer days.
In addition to his parents and 5 siblings, he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia with whom he enjoyed 64 years of marriage. Surviving him are his daughter, Patricia Houston (Greg); sons, Richard Monahan, Michael Monahan, and Timothy Monahan; grandchildren, Kathleen Weimer (Ed), Casandra White (Chris), Ryan Billson (Veronica), Brian Monahan (Angela), Christopher Monahan (Candice), Patrick Monahan, Michaela Chambers (Michael), Kaitlin Stanton (Joe), Kevin Monahan, Jordan Monahan (Genevieve), Chandler Bergman, and Bennett Bergman; and great grandchildren, Samantha, Julia, Alexandra, Nicholas, Joseph, Ryder, Jack, Jenna, Avery, Bode, Ryker, Eleanor, Mackenzie, and Olive.
Recitation of the Rosary will be at 10:30am followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00am, on Friday, April 30 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5503 Bella Rosa Parkway, Frederick, Colorado. A private Committal Service will follow.
In Bob's honor, donations may be made to the Robert Monahan Memorial Fund at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
