Born in Shanghai, China, on March 14, 1936, Yuanhui was the youngest of 6 siblings to the late Jianmin Lin and Shuzi Zhao. After a turbulent youth in wartime China, she graduated from the Fuzhou No. 1 High School and enrolled in Shanghai Maritime University in 1953; however, family circumstances prevented her from pursuing her dream of becoming a sailor. She was later transferred to Dalian Institute of Technology (currently Dalian University of Technology), where she earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1957. Yuanhui spent 40 years working in China’s machinery and instrumentation industry. After a long and fulfilling career, she retired and moved to the United States in 2003 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen and enjoyed her senior years surrounded by family and friends.
Yuanhui was known for her loving and caring nature and embraced life to the fullest. She adapted easily to new environments, learning English quickly in Boston through ESL classes and tutors. Some of her tutors later became her lifelong friends. She used her English skills to volunteer in Boston by helping new immigrants, and was honored with a Boston Mayor’s Award for her work. Her warmth and kindness earned her many friends from all walks of life, including young people who affectionately called her “big sister”. Her legacy is marked by the lasting impression she made on many people who knew her.
Yuanhui was predeceased by her husband Hao Lu in 2019, and her daughter-in-law Hiromi Kyomiya in 2024. She is survived by her daughter Jill (Qing) Lu, son Riku Kyomiya (Ting Lu), son-in-law Charles (Zhichao) Tao, grandson Eric Tao, granddaughter Rachel Tao and her husband Yan Gil, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews in the U.S. and In China.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, from 1 to 4 PM in the J.S. Waterman-Langone Chapel, 580 Commercial Street, Boston, MA 02109.
