He was born in Charleston, West Virginia on September 26, 1936 to Rabbi Samuel and Lillian (Bass) Cooper. He attended Harvard College, University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Case Western Reserve University for residency and Hammersmith Hospital in London, England for a fellowship in hematology and blood bank immunology. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War at the Chelsea Naval Base in Chelsea, MA. He then became part of the faculty of the department of Pathology at Tufts New England Medical Center. He transitioned to Chief of Pathology at the Faulkner Hospital in 1988 and spent the remainder of his medical career there.
He was a true renaissance man with many passions and projects that brought him much happiness. He established Mountain Meadows Farm, the largest organic beef cattle farm in New England, after purchasing a farm in Vermont in 1995. He and his dedicated farm staff led by Brian Kemp went on to win multiple awards throughout the years for the farm’s environmental stewardship.
He was also an avid stamp collector with an impressive collection of American stamps. In his earlier years he collected fine wines and throughout his life he has written numerous poems that show his romantic side. Astronomy also fascinated him and although he had a telescope his dream was to have an observatory on the farm in Vermont. In addition to his intellectual endeavors he also took up speed bag boxing in his later years. He often choreographed his speed bag routines to music and enjoyed giving tips to the younger boxers who came to admire his style. His lust for learning never ceased.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Dr. Lori Adcock and their daughter Thea Cooper. He also leaves his daughter Rachel Cooper (Victor) and son Daniel Cooper (Valerie) from his previous marriage to Dr. Lorna Bratton Cooper, as well as a grandson, Jack. His brothers Joel (Janet) and Jonathan and their families will miss him as well as his many friends; especially his four legged companions, Max and Mollie.
We are grateful for the doctors and staffs of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital for their excellent care, kindness and compassion. Donations to either institution in Amiel’s name would be greatly appreciated. Services are private.
