On December 4, 2015, Opal Davis Meyer passed away peacefully at the age of 91, at Katy Manor Nursing Home. Opal was born on April 18, 1924. She was the only child of Pearl and Jim Hickerson, but was raised by her grandparents, Pauline and Joe Davis due to her mother’s lengthy illness. Opal graduated from New Franklin High School, and attended both the University of Missouri and the University of Colorado. During World War II, she worked in the offices of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis. After the war, she came back home to New Franklin, Missouri, to the family farm and taught school in a rural schoolhouse. She met Elliott Jacob (Jake) Meyer and they were married. They had two children. Opal’s passions were antiquing, genealogy, and local history. She was very active in the Howard County Historical Society for many years, and welcomed the chance to share her knowledge of the area with visitors. Opal is survived by her sons Andy (Susan) Meyer of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Bob (Sally) Meyer of Diamond, Missouri. She had four grandchildren: Shelley (Shane) Williams of Auburn, Washington; James (Nancy) Meyer of San Diego, California; Katie Meyer of Columbia, Missouri; and Kelly Meyer of Diamond, Missouri. She had two great-grandchildren: Blake Williams of Auburn, Washington; and Sofia Meyer of San Diego, California. As per her request, Opal has been cremated under the direction of the Thatcher Funeral Home in Boonville, Missouri. A private graveside service will be held.
