She is survived by husband, James Barrett, daughters—Elissa M. Beck & Carmen M. Barrett; grandsons—Matthew Beck and Joshua Beck; son-in-law Todd Beck & future son-in-law Matthew Olow; brothers & sisters—Darlene Jackson, Roland Solis, Pamela Zuniga, Barry Zuniga, Robyn Zuniga, and James Zuniga; sisters-in-law Eileen Zuniga and Linda Solis and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Born February 19, 1943 in Fullerton, California to Refugio and Elsie Zuniga and grew up in San Ysidro, California. She graduated from Mar Vista High in 1960 where she excelled in her studies, played and sang in the choir, Cogitators, Y.F.C. and Girls’ League. Her Nickname was Pest and her favorite saying was “You know”.
On February 17, 1962, she married James Henry Barrett and continued to live in San Ysidro. On September 2, 1963 their first daughter was born—Elissa Montealegre. Fourteen months later their second daughter—Carmen Montealegre was born November 28, 1964. They served many years at First Southern Baptist San Ysidro. They moved to Imperial Beach in August 1970. Later she served many years at First Southern Baptist Chula Vista. She used her talents in music and teaching children. Her love for her Savior grew.
She also used her talents and abilities in the optometry field working for the offices of Doctors May, Smith and Mason and Doctors Sieben and Huang. She obtained her optician’s and realtor’s license.
In 1983, she saw her eldest daughter, Elissa, marry Todd Robert Beck, later graduate from college, and develop her own business. But it was in 1987, the first of her two joys was born—grandson Matthew Stephan Beck. Two and a half years later, her second joy was born—grandson Joshua Andrew Beck.
She witnessed her younger daughter, Carmen, graduate from college, obtain her masters, and grow to become an accomplished Kindergarten Teacher and musician. She was not able to witness her marriage to Matthew Olow; but did live to see her engaged.
Her love for the Lord and dependence on Him was evident and encouraged her daughters, grandsons, family and friends to develop that relationship with the Savior she loved. Her favorite sayings to her daughters was, “God will provide” and “May God take care of us”. She had a beautiful, big smile and heart to help. Many times her concern magnified into worry to which her grandsons would say, “Grandma, don’t worry”. But, it was her love for those she loved and cared for that drove her many warnings and concerns.
Her strength and determination during her last years was rooted in her love for her Savior and in the promises of His word, The Bible. She spoke of Him and His Word often. As she became weaker and could do less, her focus on Jesus became stronger. It was her faith in Jesus that saw her through, and it was that faith in Jesus that she wanted people to know. She will be missed; but her testimony will ever be remembered by those she touched throughout her 69 years of life.
