Marilyn Louise Marlow Baer passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side. Marilyn was raised in San Diego by her parents, Olivia and Raymond Marlow, and her loving adopted grandmother, Claire Belle Harvey.
Marilyn attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Rosary High School, graduating in 1962. In 1966, she earned her BA in English from San Diego State and later her MA in English. In 1967, Marilyn received her secondary teaching credential, where she met her future husband, Brad, whom she married in 1969.
Marilyn taught Reading at O’Farrell Jr. High (1967-73) and then Advanced English classes at San Diego High (1976-95) and Mira Mesa High (1996-2003). Her insight and enjoyment of literature were a part of her life until her death, evident by her wonderful library of books and her encyclopedic memory of them.
For years, during summer vacations, Marilyn traveled with her husband and daughters and the extended Baer family, camping in the western United States and later traveling on several river cruises in Europe and the US with her sister, Claire.
After her husband Brad’s passing in 2008, Marilyn filled her life with the beautiful home they built in 1977 and its amazing gardens. Many of her happiest moments were enjoying the view from her dining room window: the birds at the birdfeeder, the bees at the water fountains, and the wildlife who joined them.
Marilyn was an avid “handicrafter”: first through knitting and embroidery, and then quilting, making many friends in years of adult education classes. Her beautiful creations are treasured by her family and friends.
She will be missed terribly by her family: daughter Helen Baer (husband Stephen Trujillo), grandson Henry; daughter Elle Johnson (wife Jeanette), grandchildren Miles and Zoe; sister Claire Cockcroft, nephew Dennis Hodge (wife Joyce), and niece Karen Weir (husband Scott). Her San Diego Baer family includes sisters-in-law Connie, Diane, and Lynn Baer, and Yvonne Baer Vellone (husband Dave), niece Libby Vellone (husband Justin Rutherford) and nephew Matt Vellone; brother-in-law Greg Baer, nephews Kevin and Kyle (wife Kijan Zendi) Baer.
Despite the health challenges Marilyn faced, she inspired all of us with her courage and resilience.
A private burial ceremony at Glen Abbey Cemetery and memorial will be held in March.
The family suggests donations to the National Cat Protection Society at https://www.natcat.org/.
