I’ve been looking for Leroy off and on for years. He was my boss and friend in the 80s at Logan Heights in SD. He attended my wedding almost 35 years ago. What a great man! Always smiling and encouraging. I’m so sad to have found out he has passed. Heaven definitely gained an angel!

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Leroy Martin. I had the pleasure of working with Leroy as the Ombudsperson for DFCS Santa Clara County. May he rest in peace.

Dear Leroy, Sixty-five years ago we were the best of pals and I have never forgotten your kindness and friendship.  So many people at SDHS loved and admired you.  I was looking forward to the 60th reunion that was cancelled so that we could resume an unfinished conversation.  Perhaps the time will come when we meet again and your light will shine into me. Leroy was always finding ways to help people!

Inspiration. Role model. Extremely intelligent. So down to Earth.   Always calm, cool and collected.  I would ask him one question about his childhood and then get ready to listen for hours.  He made everything sound so wonderful.  My Mom's big Brother.  She never said it directly but she really looked up to him.  My Mom often bragged to me about Uncle Leroy's many accomplishments.  He achieved so much but was so humble.  He remained a man that advocated for the enhancement of our communities.   He championed the forgotten, the homeless, the unemployed.  He was the Boss that made everyone feel as important as he was.  Didn't have to yell or raise his voice but led by example.  We would laugh and joke and bag on each other the moment we saw each other.  Then after. He would often end up telling some awe inspiring story about how he fought for civil rights.  Or about my Grandfather and Grandmother's life on the ranch.  He often challenged me to be great.  Our last conversations, he made me feel like I was "accomplished."  I didn't do it the way he expected but I felt the he was proud.  That meant alot to me.  Earlier this year, I found myself bragging about my Uncle to executives in LA County, where I am currently employed. 
Some of them were familiar with him and stated how good of a man he was.  

I have to mention that my Mom said he use to read the whole newspaper everyday.  Not sure how true that was but I started reading more books because I had to be ready for my next conversation with Uncle Leroy.  Our conversations would usually end up in an intellectual argument about the Lakers and Golden State Warriors.  Lol!!! 

Also, my uncle had to be the fastest 60 year old man on Earth.  Challenging his kids boyfriends to sprints, and smoking them.  That is the one thing I heard him brag about over and over again.  

He lived a wonderful life.  Hugs and kisses to my Beautiful Auntie Jeanine and my love Leanne.  Love you love you!!!

Leroy Martin is an exceptional human being who's spirt illuminated wherever his presence exalted. In the field of Social Work, he inspired the best of me to become the best service provider for our families. 

I greatly enjoyed working for Leroy in the 1990s in Income Maintenance District Operations.  He was very competent, and also fair, kind and had a good sense of humor - a great boss and mentor. 

Uncle Leroy… words can’t express just how much you will be missed.  You’re sincere heart, loving smile and kind words of genuine advice.  I would always love making you laugh and saying something that’s you’d question just so you can  say “Are you serious?” So i could  hear you laugh again!

I remember Leroy from my early days with the County as an Eligibility Worker for the Logan Heights Welfare Office.  He was the District Chief.  Despite the office always being crazy busy; it was apparent he always cared about people and had the workers backs.  I'm especially appreciative of his allowing my going part time in 1985 realizing how important it was to me.  Thank you Leroy.  May your memory be for a blessing.  Robbie Bailund

Leroy was my boss for a couple of years. He was a great role model in public service. He gave me excellent advice and always had my back.  It was a privilege to know him. 

I remember Leroy from when I started working for San Diego County Mental Health.  He worked  in a demanding office handling public assistance for the County of San Diego in the mid 80’s. He had a real sense of social justice. Was trying to do something about homeless issues back then. Incredible that was 35 years ago.  A good man. I was privileged to have known him.
