Cavallo, Delores, of Boca Raton, FL, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2011. She will be missed by all who knew her and who were touched by her kindness and sharp wit. She was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and attended various schools and colleges there before moving to Washington, DC. During World War II, she worked at the American Red Cross and obtained BA and MA degrees from George Washington University. While at George Washington, she met her husband, Guido Cavallo.
She began a 30-year teaching career in Falls Church, Virginia, then taught in Arlington, and finished her career at Langley High School in McLean, Virginia. She was an innovative teacher, being one of the first to teach high school film, photography, creative writing, and popular culture in the early 1970s. After retirement, she began devoting more time to her photographic interests, entering local and international competitions. Her accomplishments as a photographer included becoming a distinguished member of the International Society of Photographers; being an outstanding winner of the Triesberg Super Circuit in Austria from 1988 to 2007; being selected as one of the top 20 nature photographers in the United States by the Society of American Photographers; being inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Freelance Photographers group; and she was also published in the Best Photography Annual publication by the Photographers Forum. She also loved poetry, reading, and writing and had many stories published by local newspapers. She was active in many organizations, such as the Pen Women, the Women in the Visual Arts, the Garden Club, and the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Guido Cavallo, daughter Trudy, son Guy, sister Dorothy Wurz of Falls Church, Virginia, and three grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Babione Funeral Home, 1100 N.
